Dr Sam Bowker is an art historian, so he usually discusses and curates other people's artwork rather than making his own. As a result, his creative practice is driven by the metaphor of translation. He creates annual literary song cycles through a journal-like process of music curation, in addition to developing sketchbooks, poetry, short stories, and 'gingertecture'. He is currently working on a series of khayal al-zill inspired shadow puppets for the production of The Alchemist's Jar (2022-2023), following the success of the shadow concert The Thief of Stars (2020-2021) for the Green Beetle Company. He is also working on a collaborative concert regarding the life and work of the early 20th century regional Australian opera singer 'Marie-Narelle' with animator Coralie McKenzie and singer Melinda Bowker.
