Professor Craig Bremner

Professor Craig Bremner

Soon after joining CSU in 2011 until the end of 2016, Craig was the joint Professor of Design at both CSU and the University of Southern Denmark. Prior to this Craig was Professor in Design Pedagogy at Northumbria University in the UK, and before that Professor of Design at the University of Canberra, where he was also Dean of the Faculty of Design & Architecture.

Craig holds a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Literature (UWA), a Master of Design (Domus Academy, Milan) and a PhD in Architecture (RMIT). Craig's research deals with developing methods to discover how and why we don't know much about the experience of design, as well as finding ways to clarify the reason why "not-knowing" is an essential and valuable beginning point of practice.

Creative Regions Lab

The Creative Regions Lab is a teaching and research hub that drives the development of creative enterprises and activities in regional Australia. The Lab's core function is to conduct research, identify themes, invent industries, direct, coordinate, respond, and promote all projects nationally and internationally. The CRL redefines creative industries in regional Australia to include the creative interface between agriculture and national and international markets (agri-tivity) and the integration of technologically advanced agriculture and manufacturing with high value services (agri-services).

An Ecology of Care Network

The aim of this project is to investigate the changing concept of Care from care about, for, giving, provision, etc… towards 'care with'. In a world suffering from a pandemic of inequality, the gesture of care must be applied to everyone and everything, not just those who can afford it. The research explores how old and new notions of care are applied from the points-of-view of many disciplinary perspectives so as not to be modularised by faculty, university, industry, government or other interest groups. To explore Care from multiple disciplinary perspectives two conferences were staged in Denmark in February 2015 and November 2016.

Design School: The Future of the Project

In recent years design has become the subject of increasing interest from many other more established disciplines. This interest derives from the perceived ability of design to traverse disciplinary edges and project possible future scenarios for the world's increasingly "wicked" problems. Through three international summits staged at the Design Museum, London this project will examine the contemporary situation of the design school from a global perspective, this project will explore how the structure of design learning and teaching, research and practice, is being transformed by a number of internal, external, and contextual factors and the implications of these changes for future iterations of the design school.

This project is an international research network partnership between Charles Sturt University, Imagination Lancaster at Lancaster University (UK), and the Design Museum London (UK). It is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (UK).

Murray Living

While the focus of the crisis in Murray-Darling Basin (MDB) is about water, economics and bio-diversity (the Living Murray), Murray Living asked how it feels to live in the region and aims to map a socio-diversity of the Basin. The regional communities located in the villages, towns and cities of the Murray-Darling Basin have been derived from the agricultural landscape. The relationship between the rural landscape and townscape is clearly defined by the historic boundaries between agriculture and urban culture creating rural islands of population clusters. And the idea or concept of regional development, once imagined to be unlimited, is now on a collision course with new kinds of limits—limits to biodiversity, limits to the flows of energy and water—in contrast to increasingly unlimited digital flows (mostly forms of entertainment), leaving rural islands to compete globally for population and productivity, and stretching the boundaries of regional identity. This project revisited the historic agri/urban boundaries to determine how people experience this condition based on the necessity to project new forms for regional living and landscape.

Landscape Derivatives

Landscape Derivatives is a proposal to design and construct temporary installations as new speculations on the urban and its relationship to landscape that can be considered as:

  • public spaces that are an intermediate territory between the natural energies from agriculture (landscape) and construction technology of the town/city
  • micro-scapes (new conditions for landscape) and not micro-climates (conditioned interiors)
  • spaces that are generated by three factors: public life, the energy equation, and the digital town/city.

Landscape Derivatives can be envisaged as both modular and one-off temporary installations that play with notions of built form and garden but are designed to be energy efficient, and socially coefficient.

A collaboration between the Creative Regions Lab, Politecnico di Milano, the Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona, and the City of Barcelona.

Learning from Farini

This project is researching how it might be possible to revive the mountain region of Farini, Italy. By revive we intend to investigate and propose ways in which it might be possible to reverse the outflow of population, restore multi-functional agricultural specialisation, create employment opportunities, and convert the unique regional knowledge into new learning models.

A collaboration between the Creative Regions Lab; IMM Lab, Politecnico di Milano; Università degli Studio di Pavia; Università Cattolica di Piacenza.

East-West Design Perspectives

This research asked what people in China make of the process called design? To get a relative sense of their answer, it also asked what does a post-industrial consumer culture (in this case Australia) make of design?

Using a unique survey method resulting in a perceptual framework the project evaluated the relative grasp of design; examined whether the same evaluative frameworks exist across what is left of the East and West dialogic; and tested whether the visual vocabularies of these cultures differ.

Preliminary findings indicate that the Chinese perceptual evaluation framework is more complex than that employed by Australians. As a result, we question the ability of design to affect differentiation in a global context.
