Dr Mary Carroll

Mary Carroll (Senior Lecturer) is the Course Director in the School of Information Studies at Charles Sturt University. Her responsibilities include meeting the needs of students in the school and taking a lead role in the Bachelor of Information Studies (BIS) and Master of Information Studies (MIS) degrees. Prior to employment at CSU she was an Early Career Development Fellow at RMIT University, Melbourne, worked for many years in LIS Vocational Education having started her career as a teacher-librarian in secondary schools in Victoria, firstly as a teacher-librarian and later as a special assistance and literacy programme co-ordinator. She has published in the area of the history of librarianship, vocational education and library education and LIS pedagogy. Her PhD was both an historical and contemporary investigation into the role sectoral educational divisions have played in the construction of LIS professional identity in Australia.  Her research has included the provision of information infrastructure by private training organisations in Australia, a project funded by a National Centre for Vocational Education Research Early Career Grant, the history of LIS education and the intersections between libraries and education. She is currently vice-president of the Australian and New Zealand History of Education Society (ANZHES) and an Associate of ALIA.

Mary's research draws on a multi-disciplinary background and is focused on the intersection of libraries, books and learning in both the contemporary and historical context. Crossing sectors and historical eras Mary's research examines the role information and information agencies play in addressing equity, promoting social inclusion and influencing broader social issues.  Her recent research has examined the provision and purpose of information services in the Vocational Education sector both in contemporary society, and historically, within the early penal settlements of Australia. She also has researched extensively in the area of education for the information professions both in Australia and internationally from the 1930s onward examining factors which have shaped the development and constructs of contemporary LIS education. Reflecting her interdisciplinary interests Mary has published and presented across these disciplines.

Mary's teaching interests include the provision of information services, history of information agencies, children's and youth librarianship and services, literature for children and youth and transition to university study.
