Australian Library & Information Association (ALIA):

What roles do librarians and information specialists undertake?

LIS Employment Vacancies: Information is provided as to recent vacancies in the LIS employment sector.  ALIA members can sign up to a weekly e-newsletter to receive a listing of current employment opportunities.  Some overseas positions are advertised here.

Career Development Advice: ALIA members can access a Career and Professional Development Advisory Service as well as receiving tips of writing curriculum vitae (CV).

Industrial Relations Advice: ALIA members have access to the Association's industrial relations advisory service.  Advice may include salary levels, awards and agreements and worker's rights in the workplace.

ALIA Groups: ALIA special groups are formed by members.  Some are geographically based while others are interest based.  Having contact or being a member of one or more of these groups may provide information about upcoming employment opportunities in an area of interest or location.

ALIA New Graduates Group: Of special interest to new graduates or students is the ALIA New Graduates Group which has branches in each state and some regional areas.  Members do not have to have graduated to become a member.

Australian Law Librarians Association: The Australian Law Librarians' Association (ALLA) aims to promote a network for law librarians, provide forums for continuing education and advocate on behalf of the interests of legal libraries and librarians in Australia.

Overseas Professional Associations

Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP): CILIP is the United Kingdom version of ALIA. Their mission is to:

  • promote and support the people who work to deliver their vision, and
  • be the leading voice for information, library and knowledge practitioners, working to advocate strongly, provide unity through shared values and develop skills and excellence.

American Library Association (ALA): The American Library Association (ALA) is the oldest and largest library association in the world, providing association information, news, events, and advocacy resources for members, librarians, and library users.

In 1998 the ALA Council voted commitment to five Key Action Areas as guiding principles for directing the Association's energies and resources: Diversity, Equity of Access, Education and Continuous Learning, Intellectual Freedom, and 21st Century Literacy.
