Workplace learning (WPL) or placement, is an important part of your education. It allows you to combine your subject content with practice through various community and human service experiences. You'll experience the frontline tasks of a community service worker and develop practical skills that you'll need in the workplace.
Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Human Services are required to complete 400 hours of workplace learning. Placements do not include any previous/current voluntary hours or observational work.
Credit & Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
In recognition of previous education or employment experience, students may be eligible for credit for 200 hours of placement for the first workplace learning subject. Please refer to the Workplace Learning Handbook to find out more about this process.

To complete the requirements of the Bachelor of Human Services, students are required to undertake a total of 400 hours in Workplace Learning placements.
One placement of 200 hours will be completed in each subject. These two subjects must be completed in two different sessions.
One placement must have a primary focus on direct practice. The other placement may have an indirect focus, in areas such as community work, policy development, or a research project.
Where you have received RPL for previous placements or work experience, your placement will be planned to balance your learning needs across the direct and indirect practice domains.

Start your NSW Health Compliance process early, as it can take up to 6 months to finalise. Students in VIC, TAS, WA, QLD, and SA will also need to provide additional documents.
Professional Field Education in your place of employment
Generally, workplace learning must be undertaken in a practice setting and field of practice which is different from your place of employment or regular voluntary work.
Student are able to undertake placement within their place of employee as long as the set criteria is met.
