National Radio News is the independent national news service for the community broadcasting sector, produced by Charles Sturt University at 2MCE-FM for almost 30 years.

Keeping community radio listeners up-to-date with news from around the nation and overseas, National Radio News is a respected, valued and alternative hourly service.

Coverage includes national issues from a regional perspective, under-represented and diverse voices from your community, and original stories from our experienced producers.

National Radio News is aligned to the guiding principles of community broadcasting with access, diversity, and independence at its heart.

We’re curious and socially responsible, telling stories from under-represented voices including regional Australia, Indigenous people, culturally and linguistically diverse people, and the LGBTQIA+ community.

We broadcast to stations in every state and territory in a range of markets, reaching 1.5 million listeners each week.

Our professional journalists are supported by the next generation of journalism talent from the Bachelor of Communication at Charles Sturt University, giving them hands-on experience whilst they study.

How to listen?

You can hear National Radio News on the hour 6am to 7pm weekdays, and 6am to 12pm weekends on Charles Sturt University’s own community radio station, 2MCE (broadcast or livestream) or via a subscribing community radio station near you.

Background

National Radio News was founded by former 2MCE-FM Manager Ian Stanistreet OAM in 1997.

2MCE at Charles Sturt University and 2NUR at the University of Newcastle formed a joint venture to deliver the news service. It was officially launched in Bathurst by veteran journalist George Negus on 16 July 1997,  and delivered via the CBAA’s ComRadSat satellite delivery system.

In 1998, 2MCE and 2NUR jointly received the prestigious Tony Staley award for National Radio News.

2NUR withdrew from National Radio News in 2000, focusing on local news for Newcastle and the Hunter. 2MCE and Charles Sturt University continued operating National Radio News, partnering with the CBAA to distribute our service to community radio stations through their Community Radio Network satellite service.

Many Charles Sturt University journalism students have launched their journalism careers by producing radio news stories for National Radio News including  Amanda Shalala (ABC Sport), Ashleigh Raper (Network 10),  Luke Dufficy (Nine), and Reuben Spargo (Sky).

Since its inception, National Radio News has been made possible with the support of the Community Broadcasting Foundation.

“What makes this news service really distinctive is its ability to interact with the community radio sector – to seek and receive reports from local stations on events of national significance”
-- Ian Stanistreet OAM, former 2MCE station manager
