Professor in Islamic Psychology

Hussein is a Professor at the Centre for Islamic Studies and Civilisation (CISAC), Professor of Islamic Psychology and Consultant at the Centre for Islamic Psychology, Riphah International University, Pakistan, and the Director of Studies for the Department of Islamic Psychology, Psychotherapy and Counselling, Al Balagh Academy. In addition, he is the Chair of Al-Balkhi Research Institute (UK). Hussein was previously the Director of the Riphah Institute of Clinical and Professional Psychology/Centre for Islamic Psychology, Riphah International University. He was the first Head of Department of Islamic Psychology at the International Open University (Islamic Online University) and later became the Dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences, at the same university. He also held the position of Professor of Mental Health and Addiction, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

He is one of the leading academics in the areas of Islamic Psychology and psychotherapy, and involved in the development of the first Bachelor of Science, Islamic Psychology course at Islamic Online University. He also developed a university accredited certificate course in Islamic Psychology which was launched in Pakistan in October 2019 as well as the Advanced Diploma in Islamic Psychology and Psychotherapy which was launched in June 2022. He has been the recipient of Florence Nightingale Research Foundation (UK). He is a Fellow of the International Association of Islamic Psychology (FIAIP) and the Royal Society of Public Health (FRSPH).  He works as a part-time Islamic psychotherapist.

Hussein lectures in topics of Islamic psychology and psychotherapy, mental health and addiction studies.

Hussein’s research interests include psychosocial and spiritual problems in relation to mental health, psychosocial and spiritual interventions, indigenous psychology, Islamic counselling and psychotherapy, Islamic ethics in psychology. He is now developing the application of the Maqasid Methodology in Islamic psychology.
