Melanie Sugumaran began her teaching career as a Secondary School Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) Teacher. She undertook additional roles under the school welfare program. She was closely involved with teacher mentoring and teacher accreditation. In 2012, Melanie moved from a Secondary School setting, to teaching in tertiary education. Since 2016, she has been a part on the Faculty of Arts and Education. First as a Workplace Learning Coordinator for the Sydney region and then moving into the Course Director role for the Bachelor and Master of Teaching Secondary. She also works for the School of Education across Professional Experience subjects.

Research interest include pre-service teacher well-being,  mid-career changers transitioning to teaching and teacher resilience.
