Sue retired from Charles Sturt University in 2018 but remains an active researcher in the field of early childhood education. Sue has been a long-time advocate for the importance of recognising and responding to young children's perspectives. She maintains this position in current projects involving children, families, and educators in explorations of transitions to school, children's play, and learning. Sue has published extensively both nationally and internationally in these areas. She is a co-chair of the Special Interest Group on Transitions at the European Early Childhood Education Research Association.

Sue’s ongoing research interests focus on educational transitions, particularly the transition to school.
Other areas of ongoing research include young children’s mathematical experiences as well as listening to and respecting the perspectives of children.
