Dr Tome worked for over 30 years in the public school system of New South Wales, as a teacher (economics, geography, Spanish), deputy principal and principal. He has also had time living and working in the United Kingdom, Mexico and Chile. He has taught in the Educational Leadership program at Charles Sturt University since 2014.

Dr Tome was an active member of the New South Wales Teachers Federation, and a member of its Council and Executive for many years. He was also an elected member of the New South Wales Quality Teaching Council.

Dr Tome has taught in the Educational Leadership program at Charles Sturt University since 2014. In that time he has written, rewritten, updated and revised almost all the subjects that are included within that program. He has a particular interest in aligning the subjects taught with the Educational Leadership program so as to enhance the leadership skills of those students who work in a variety of educational settings.

Dr Tome has also worked with students in the K-12 Teacher Education program, focussing in particular on issues of assessment and reporting, and pedagogies to meet the diverse range of students in schools.

Dr Tome is interested in the professional biographies of teachers, and the ways in which teachers innovate and take on new ideas and new techniques.

He is also very interested in the schooling systems of Latin America, particularly that of Chile.
