Jo is extremely passionate about creating successful learning experiences and environments for all students.

Jo has been a member of the Inclusive Education team at CSU since 2011. Prior to this role, she trained as a primary school teacher, working predominantly in the independent sector. Her most recent position in schools was as a Learning Support Teacher/Coordinator. In that capacity, her was responsible for team teaching, small group intervention, managing funding applications and evaluations, and providing regular whole-staff professional development on current research-based practices for the effective inclusion of all students. She collaborated closely with staff by providing instruction and modeling these practices within classrooms to facilitate the creation of differentiated learning experiences for students.

Since transitioning from schools into tertiary education, Jo has continued to support classroom teachers and school executives through her role at CSU and several advisory positions.

During Jo’s tenure in schools, she earned a MEd in Literacy and a MEd in Inclusive Education.

In her work in tertiary education, Jo completed a PhD in Linguistics with a dissertation entitled “Reading Fluency in Children of Early Primary-School-Age: Assessment and Targeted Instruction.”

Research Interests

  • Deficits in reading fluency and concurrent deficits in RAN speed and reading comprehension.
  • Repeated reading as an effective intervention for children with poor reading fluency.
  • RAN and PA as predictors of children’s reading accuracy and fluency at single word and text levels.
  • Inclusive Education for the equitable education of all students with diverse needs.
  • Pedagogical Translanguaging Knowledge to support EAL/D learners.
