Joanne (Jo) Medlin is an adult literacy and numeracy teacher and consultant. Her educational work across university, VET, adult community education, schools and in media focusses on access and equity. Jo’s expertise includes adult literacy and numeracy, foundation skills, special education, and plain language or readability.

Jo has advocated for adult literacy and numeracy (LN) learners for over a decade. Through volunteer positions, including her current roles of president of the Australian Council for Adult Literacy (ACAL) and national steering committee membership (currently the Reading Writing Hotline and JSA Foundation Skills Study Steering Committee), she also advocates for the adult LN workforce and other stakeholders.

In addition to CSU, Jo has developed and provided professional development to the adult community education field, VET trainers, businesses, government organisations, and volunteer tutors. She consulted and appeared on two seasons of the SBS production Lost for Words raising awareness of the challenges faced by adults with unmet literacy and numeracy needs.  In the VET sector, where she started in adult education in 1995, Jo has worked as a teacher and head teacher, in industry relationship and business development, and as an accredited curriculum writer and resource developer.
