Global Social Work: Cross cultural and de-colonising approaches

Individual social workers operate mainly at the local level, but they are also guided by universal values. The AASW code commits social worders to abide by UN aspirations for a just, fair and peaceful international order:

The profession subscribes to the principles and aspirations of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, other international conventions derived from that Declaration, as well as treaties to which Australia is a signatory and other human rights documents.

This group will focus on addressing the challenges of creating a multicultural society and aims to develop a multicultural approach in social work. In addressing colonising approaches, the group will join hands with like-minded researchers and academics from around the world in developing new paradigms for social work including indigenisation of social work, challenging privilege, and oppression of the powerless by the powerful.

At the international level, the group will endeavour to create alliances with researchers and research centres that are engaged in social development, and which explore new paradigms in social and sustainable development.
