Suzanne Hodgkin is a Professor of Social Work at CSU. She has forty years of social work experience in management, supervision, research, teaching and practice across several sectors. She was a previous Regional Manager for Child Protection, Juvenile Justice and Out of Home Care, for the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services. She completed her PhD in 2005 at Latrobe University and holds both a Masters and Bachelor degrees in social work. Prior to joining CSU in 2024, she has held academic positions at ACU (Professor and Head of Social Work, Deputy Head of School of Allied Health, Brisbane) and at La Trobe University (Head of Campus, Albury-Wodonga, Deputy Director John Richards Centre for Rural Ageing Research, Associate Head, La Trobe Rural Health School). Professor Hodgkin an expert in mixed methods methodology. She has led research teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She is also an experienced research supervisor having supervised both honours and doctoral students to successful completion. Professor Hodgkin’s ’principal research interests lie in exploring real-world problems specifically related to the Care Economy. Her recent work examines the precarity and capacity of Australian’s aged care sector. In 2022-2023 she led the evaluation of the Queensland Intermediary Program and the subsequent report “Providing best evidence in child sexual assault proceedings: final report on an evaluation of the Queensland Intermediary Scheme”. Her other research areas include the provision of services and supports to older people living in rural communities, and how formal care combines with informal care. She has published her work in several international and national journals. She has also disseminated findings from her research to international and national conferences. In 2019, she was called as an expert academic witness to the Royal Commission into Aged Care and Safety to highlight issues for carers of older people. Professor Hodgkin is a part of the research team that supports the National Aged Care Alliance. Together the members of the alliance aspire to transform care work into a sector of choice.
