BA Aboriginal Studies, MA Archaeology, PhD Environ Studies Jillian is a long-term academic and a multi-disciplinary researcher and educator. She is of Adnyamathanha descent and her home Country is the northern Flinders Ranges region of South Australia. She brings deep experience in the development of Indigenous-centred research, and culturally responsive learning and teaching. Her expertise is grounded in community-driven research and includes Indigenous Australian language maintenance and revival, Indigenous cultural heritage and archaeology, impact assessment and industry engagement, and environmental justice. Her previous academic positions include Director of Graduate Studies at Batchelor Institute, Lecturer in Indigenous Knowledges at Swinburne University, and Research Fellow with the University Department of Rural Health UniSA. Jillian has experience in leading the development and delivery of new courses and subjects, decolonising existing teaching programs, teaching accreditation subjects, and supervising Honours and postgraduate coursework students. She teaches from an Indigenous Standpoint perspective and critical theory approach. Jillian has taught within UG and PG programs within a range of disciplinary areas including Indigenous Knowledges, Sociology, Anthropology, History, and Linguistics, and has a particular interest in culturally responsive teaching, ethically sound Indigenous research methods and methodologies, and cultural safety within the workplace. Jillian publishes widely and produces NTROs as well as academic works. Her research collaboration is inter-disciplinary and cross-institutional, currently she is involved in numerous projects including an evaluation of partnerships that strengthen very remote and remote education across Australia. Grant applications to ARC: Industry Research Fellow category: Building Knowledge for Reconciliation Action in Industry and Construction and Discovery Indigenous category: “Language Sovereignty through Digital Technology: Indigenous Australian Dictionary APP for Speakers, Learners, Readers and Writers” Current project work includes PRF philanthropic project (funded) commencing in Jan 2025 over 2 years – focus on very remote schools in NSW and elsewhere:“The Paul Ramsay Foundation evaluation of Funding Australian Schools Plus for remote and very remote schools partnership” Among a range of volunteer activities, Jillian is a community linguist working with the Adnyamathanha Yura Language & Heritage Association Inc, and works with small corporations to undertake community-driven land use and language preservation projects, and family heritage work. Jillian continues to support NGOs with her research advocacy work in areas such as environmental and industry-based land use justice through native title, cultural heritage, land rights, and other Indigenous human rights charters, best practice models, and legal frameworks.Teaching and Research Staff
