Liza Moscatelli is a social worker and multidisciplinary artist. She is a Workplace Learning Coordinator/ Lecturer in Social Work based at Charles Sturt University, Biripai land (Port Macquarie), Mid North Coast of New South Wales. Her interests and work focus on critical social work, decolonising social work practice, research and education, mental health and wellbeing through an intersectional and decolonised lens, and creative research methods. Liza's academic pursuits include a Master of Philosophy (Social Science) focusing on the experiences of newly arrived adolescents from refugee backgrounds in Western Sydney. She is passionate about teaching social work and was recognised for excellence in teaching. Liza has extensive experience in community work with a focus on youth, women, and children. As a practicing artist since 2010, she collaborates with various individuals and organisations to promote social justice through the visual and multimedia arts including photography, videography, and graphic design. Her work is guided by social justice principles, aiming to contribute to a better world through her art and social work practice.

Liza transitioned from facilitating arts-based workshops to communities to teaching Social Work at Western Sydney University, specialising in subjects like Working with Cultural Differences, Communities and Social Action and more. She also guest lectured on visual research methods and visual communication. Liza contributed to research projects by creating a Video Essay Guide for students’ major assessment and producing Men's Health videos as an educational resource. She values a collaborative teaching approach, viewing education as a mutual exchange of knowledge between herself and her students.

  • Decolonising social work practice, research and education
  • Mental health through an intersectional lens
  • Visual and creative research methodologies (Photovoice and the video essay)
  • Mass media and the impact on local and global communities

Current Projects:

  • Oral and poster presentation on: Bayanihan ‘Spirit of Community’: Reconnecting to culture and fostering cultural wellbeing among the Filipino diaspora in Western Sydney - International Social Work, Education and Social Development (SWSD 2024) Conference in Panama (April 2024, Panama City, Panama, Centra America)
  • Master of Philosophy (Social Science) – Thesis on the lived experiences of young people from refugee circumstances who are resettling in Western Sydney, Australia (March 2024, Western Sydney University).
