Mary Carroll is currently a Course Director in the School of Information and Communication Studies at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga, Australia with responsibility for the Bachelor’s and Master of Information Studies. Previously she was Associate Head of School (Staffing and Development) before retiring early 2024. She was an elected member of the Australian Library and Information Association Board of Directors 2021-2023 and has worked in a variety of organisations both as an educator and practitioner. In her previous careers she has been an Early Career Development Fellow at RMIT University, Melbourne, an educator in the Vocational Education sector, a Teacher Librarian and a language and literacy specialist in secondary schools in Victoria and a librarian in academic libraries. Research interests include vocational education, library development and educational reform, the history of education for librarianship, library history and cross-sectoral library education associated with contemporary education in Australia.

Mary’s research draws on a multi-disciplinary background and is focused on the intersection between libraries, books and learning in both the contemporary and historical contexts. Crossing sectors and historical eras her research examines the role information and information agencies play in addressing equity, promoting social inclusion and influencing broader social issues. She has also researched extensively in the area of education for the information professions in Australia examining factors which have shaped the development of contemporary LIS education. Her current research focuses on the relationships between school and public libraries, professionalism and librarianship and libraries as physical spaces  in Australian settler-colonial culture.
