Halal Certification in Australia: History, Muslim Consumer Perception and Reliance

Recognizing the importance of catering to diverse religious needs, the Australian government and industry stakeholders including overseas governments began developing halal certification systems. Today, the halal industry in Australia is a dynamic and integral part of the country's export market by emerging as one of the top global producers and exporters of halal products, showcasing a well-established industry that adheres to strict certification standards. The exchange of expertise and mutual understanding between Australia and its Muslim neighbours has played a pivotal role in shaping the history and development of the halal industry in the country. Contextually, further highlights the interconnectedness of global trade and influences on Australia's halal practices. The Australian halal industry has stimulated economic growth and increased job opportunities. Australia’s commitment to quality control and compliance has contributed to its reputation as a reliable source for halal certified goods, strengthening international trade relationships and positioning the nation as a key player in the global halal market as a $30 billion industry. However, with globalisation there are negative perception in the industry often based on misunderstanding and misinformation which this research seeks to gain through surveys using a mixed method approach using quantitative and qualitative data.
In completion of my Bachelor of Islamic Studies (Honours) and my supervisors believed I should continue with my studies in a PhD. My honours degree paved the way for me to lead into my PhD.
