Evolution of Political Islam: The Case of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt
Principal Supervisor: Associate Professor Mehmet Ozalp
Co-Supervisor: Associate Professor Derya Iner
My research delves into how political Islam, as the primary ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood, was put to the test during their rule in 2012. By examining the politics and sociology of the Muslim Brotherhood, this study provides insights into the diversity of Islamic movements. The term 'political Islam' originated with the Muslim Brotherhood but has been adopted by various Islamic movements worldwide, all of which share a common set of ideologies and social dynamics. To understand this topic, I have published several research papers to examine not only political Islam but Islamism and other Islamic ideologies, and my ability to speak five languages (Arabic, English, French, Thai and Malay) had given me the advantage of going through different literatures and studies. To gain a comprehensive understanding of this topic, I have authored several research papers that examine not only political Islam but also Islamism and other Islamic ideologies. My proficiency in five languages (Arabic, English, French, Thai, and Malay) has provided me with a distinct advantage in reviewing a wide range of literature and studies.
Although I have completed my bachelor's and master's degrees in Malaysia, I have been searching for a university that offers a comprehensive Islamic studies program, one that goes beyond just focusing on fiqh and hadith studies. In my quest, I came across CSU, which has a dedicated department offering a wide range of Islamic studies, including a special focus on political Islam – which aligns with the primary focus of my research. Given that my research area encompasses socialisation, terrorism, and political sociology, I found CSU to be an ideal choice for pursuing my PhD. CSU's research team in Islamic studies and civilisation includes knowledgeable scholars with extensive experience in this field, which further solidified my decision to select CSU for my doctoral studies.
