His research into cultural competence was supported, through the Yinyamurra dhuray Yalbalinya initiative, working closely with cross cultural community groups engaging with an Indigenous learning framework at both school and university levels. Matt also works with both the Australian Rugby Union and Samoan Rugby Union to provide an international framework for HPE students to develop inter-cultural competence and global citizenship. Matt has been a member of the Head Strong research team, a collaborative research initiative between Charles Sturt University, the Black Dog Institute and the University of New South Wales investigating issues relating to mental health within regional secondary schools and the SunSmart research team, (Charles Sturt, the NSW Cancer Council, Macquarie University and Sydney University) investigating the efficacy of sun protection policy and programs in primary schools.
